There is alot to be said about public access to amenities such as the public transit and library. For the most part I am perfectly comfortable riding the bus except when strange things happen. For instance, a man sitting behind me sneezed right directly into my hair and didnt so much as apologize or even attempt to cover his face. Really, when you sneeze you have at least a split second warning and turn your head away or your head automatically goes down when the actual sneeze occurs. Not this guy. He held his head up, proud of himself that the sneeze did not take control of him. Good for him, however, its been my experience that when you dont relax when you sneeze something on the other end of your body must let go. I hope he put on clean shorts the next time he got on the bus.
The library is another story. When did the library stop being a place where someone could go read where it was quiet? People come and go and are loud when they talk. Kids run up and down the isles and even the librarians are talking loud. Right now I am sitting next to a woman who should be completely engrossed in her work (I see lots of math and spreadsheets so she really needs to pay attention to her task) but she is paying attention to me. Opps...she just read this and went back to her work. I do appreciate the public venues but show some respect for your fellow supporters of that public venue.
You dont see pay phones like you used to. I know that cell phone use has made the payphone nearly obsolete but there are still some people that dont want to go with the times and refuse to get a cell phone. For the most part the plans that cell phone companies offer are so confusing that even Thomas Edison (who is celebrating his birthday today in some alternate realm) would not understand. I dont want to go with technology but I have no choice. Getting a land line is far too expensive and the cell phone I have at least allows me to check my facebook, twitter and email. So what if I forget my cell phone? Where can I find a pay phone in case of emergency? One that is clean and has a phone book attached would be nice.
Everytime I get on the bus I see rows of people with their heads down reading their tiny little gadgets and completely ignoring everyone around them. Public access is an ebb and flow of social connection. Once we were able to have a conversation with a complete stranger because we werent near the people we knew, but now we are keeping in contact with only the people we know and ignoring the complete stranger.
Isnt public access a wonderful thing? We get to socialize with the people we know and get to ignore the ones we dont know. The nice weather is coming so I soon will be able to hang up my bus tickets and walk to the library where I dont dare make eye contact with anyone because I am a stranger. Thats ok, I need to get my camera out anyway and I prefer to work alone.
Till next time
